Discurso de Apertura

Bienvenidos al Congreso en Argentina ICCF del dos mil cinco y en especial doy gracias a nuestros anfitriones por el gran local natural. Toda esta belleza de la naturaleza nos debe inspirar en nuestro trabajo. Podemos vencer todas dificultades entre montañas y lagos magníficos en el espíritu de Amici Sumus. Nuestras muy especiales gracias a nuestro organizador Carlos Cranbourne y Dr. Angel Pablo Guido para hacer exactamente eso.

Welcome to the 2005 ICCF Congress in Argentina and a special thanks to our hosts for the great natural setting. All this beauty of nature should inspire us in our work. We can overcome all difficulties among magnificent mountains and lakes in the spirit of Amici Sumus. Our very special thanks to our organizer Carlos Cranbourne and Dr. Angel Pablo Guido for doing exactly that.

Las decisiones mayores para ICCF ya han sido tomadas por ésos antes de nosotros - en los Congresos previos. Tenemos la tarea agradable de sólo tratar con cambios y mejoras secundarios en este Congreso. Necesitamos sólo continuar lo que ya se ha empezado. Podemos utilizar nuestro pasado exitoso para adelantarnos en el futuro.

The major decisions for ICCF have already been taken by those before us - at the previous congresses. We have the pleasant task of only dealing with minor changes and improvements at this congress. We need to only continue what has already been started. We can draw upon our successful past to move forward in the future.

Debemos tener presente que ICCF es una organización de federaciones, no individuos, y que una sola persona no es tan importante. También debemos recordar que cada federación tiene un ambiente diferente, la estructura, y situación. Nuestra abilidad para acomodar todo, el significado verdadero de Amici Sumus, es el secreto de nuestro éxito. Esto significa que cuando tenemos un voto democrático y no somos unánimes, entonces debemos atender a aún una sola voz que disiente. Por supuesto puede haber las diferencias filosóficas. Pienso que abriendo el juego con el peón de rey es mejor, mientras que muchos de ustedes piensan que el peón de reina es mejor. Aquí podríamos tener un argumento fuerte y un voto se dividiría con enmiendas para mover a caballeros u otros peones como nuestro movimiento de apertura. Así que debemos evitar tales desacuerdos y en lugar permitir a los jugadores escoger las aperturas que los complacen mejor. Podemos permitir que jugadores jueguen por el puesto, por correo electrónico, por Webserver o por cualquier otros medios. Debemos alentar organizadores a ser flexibles y creativos en su diseño de torneos y control del tiempo. Debemos sostener todas formas del ajedrez que correspondan. No debemos de argumentar sobre formas - como un juego de ajedrez se abre - es un asunto de preferencia, pero pueden recomendarle a otros de mejoras. Personalmente me encanta el Webserver porque no tengo que gastar tanto tiempo con la contabilidad y la grabación.

We must keep in mind that ICCF is an organization of federations, not individuals, and that one person is not so important. Also we must remember that every federation has a different environment, structure, and situation. Our ability to accommodate all, the true meaning of Amici Sumus, is the secret of our success. This means that when we have a democratic vote and it is not unanimous, then we must pay attention to even a single dissenting voice. Of course there can be philosophical differences. I think opening the game with the king pawn is better, while you may think that queen pawn is best. Here we can have a loud argument and a vote would be split with amendments for moving knights or other pawns as our opening move. So we must avoid such disagreements and instead allow players to choose the openings that please them the best. We can let players play by post, by email, by webserver or by any other means. We should encourage organizers to be flexible and creative in their design of tournaments and time control. We must support all forms of correspondence chess. We must not argue over what form as that - like a chess opening - is a matter of preference, but we can recommend and tell others of improvements. I personally love the webserver because I no longer have to spend so much time with the accounting and recording.

Nosotros no debemos olvidarnos que las necesidades de jugadores ordinarios pueden ser bastante diferentes de la de los jugadores de primera. El jugador ordinario quiere una experiencia entretenida y agradable con la cantidad mínima de la contabilidad, registrar, distracciones, y las dificultades al obtener movimientos oportunos de su adversario. Debemos proporcionar eso. Demasiadas de nuestras reglas son diseñadas para los campeones mundiales y no para jugadores que desean gozar apenas un juego del Ajedrez. La tecnología del Webserver es un paso inmenso en la dirección correcta a esta meta.

We must not forget that the needs of ordinary players can be quite different from that of the top players. The ordinary player wants an entertaining and pleasant experience with the minimal amount of accounting, recording, distractions, and difficulties in getting timely moves from his opponent. We must provide that. Too many of our rules are designed for the World Champions and not for players who wish to just enjoy a game of Chess. The web server technology is a huge step in the right direction, to this goal.

Y finalmamente, nosotros no debemos olvidarnos de los organizadores y administradores que trabajan largo y duro como voluntarios para que nosotros podamos tener los torneos. Sobre la tabla del ajedrez yo he visto con demasiada frecuencia a los jugadores de primera atacar sin misericordia a los directores del torneo, a los organizadores, y a otros funcionarios. Sin organizadores, nosotros no tendríamos los torneos y nuestros grandes jugadores no tendrían oportunidad de mostrar su habilidad y obtener victoria gloriosa. En el ajedrez de la correspondencia, nosotros hemos sido bendecidos con otro tipo de jugador de primera, los campeones mundiales que son humildes, que son seres humanos, que han sido verdaderos a Amici Sumus. También hemos sido bendecidos también con grandes trabajadores y organizadores - especialmente en la oficina de torneo del mundo. El trabajo de Pedro Hegoburu, Daniel Finkelstein y muchos otros, este año ha sido extraordinario.

En el calor de la competencia, a veces un jugador puede tener unos desacuerdos y abusar al director de torneo si él no obtiene su manera. También nuestro TD es humano, ellos deben interpretar las reglas y las pautas y hacer las decisiones. Debemos animar a la mayoría de los TD mas experimentados a preguntar el consejo de otros TD cuando hay una situación que no es común. Y como mi antecesor, el Presidente Josef Mrkvicka correctamente indicó, nosotros no debemos gritar a nuestros voluntarios. Al mismo tiempo, es el trabajo del Presidente de imponer los estatutos, si él concuerda con ellos o no, y puedo afirmar que así lo ha hecho.

And lastly, we must not forget the organizers and administrators who work long and hard on a volunteer basis so we can have tournaments. In over the board chess I have seen all too often the world champions and other top players attacking without mercy the tournament directors, organizers, and other officials. Without organizers, we would have no tournaments and our great players would have no opportunity to show their ability and win glory. In correspondence chess, we have been blessed with another type of top player, world champions who are humble, who are human beings, who are true to Amici Sumus. And we have also been blessed with great workers and organizers - especially in the world tournament office. The work of Pedro Hegoburu, Daniel Finkelstein, and many others this year has been extraordinary.

In the heat of competition, sometimes a player can have misunderstandings and abuse the tournament director if he does not get his way. Also our TD's are human, they must interpret the rules and guidelines and make decisions. We should encourage even our most experienced TD's to ask advice of other senior TD's when the situation is unusual. And as my predecessor, President Josef Mrkvicka, correctly pointed out, we must not shout at our volunteers. At the same time, it is the job of the President to enforce the statutes, whether he agrees with them or not, and I can say I have done so.

Así, nuestro tema para este Congreso es el espíritu de Amici Sumus, es el de acomodar la manera de ver las opiniones y situaciones de otros.

So our theme for this Congress is the spirit of Amici Sumus, that of accommodation to the views and opinions and situations of others.

Este año como siempre nosotros hemos perdido a amigos de ICCF. Ellos siempre serán extrañados. Sus juegos permanecen todavía con nosotros. Ellos vivirán para siempre en las bases de datos y sus logros no se olvidarán. Así que por favor pónganse de pie y compartan conmigo un momento de silencio por los amigos de ajedrez que han partido.

This year as always we have lost friends of ICCF. They will always be missed. Their games are still with us. They will live on forever in the databases and their achievements will not be forgotten. So please stand with me and share a moment of silence for those chess friends who have departed
