Photo Walks Around Town

My photo walk of 5 May 2009

5 May 2009

I need some materials from the hardware store today so instead of driving I decided to walk. I took a route which took me by some of the main places in Mason. I went past the historic Kean's Store, a variety store where you can buy toys, candy and general merchandise. Everyone in the area knows about Kean's. I use to live one block from Kean's but now live about five blocks away. From there I went past the library, post office and fire station. After going past a number of private residences I reached the desired goal the Ace Hardware Store. I got my shopping done and also accomplished a 52-minute walk.

1-3. The famous Kean's Store. On the same corner is one of Mason's newest establishments The Vault selling meats, cheeses, wines and gourmet sandwiches. Looks like I tilted the camera up for that shot.

4-6. Next I walked past the Mason Public Library and took two shots. It's an attractive little building much in need of repair or replacement. The last election had a vote on replacing the library but it didn't pass. Across the street from the library is the Mason U. S. Post Office. As a postal chess player I use to know my local post office well, but now I've switched to using the Internet (chess server) to compete in correspondence chess.

Mason Fire Station
7-9. Just past the library is the City Hall and Police Department. Next to it is the new Fire Station, built only a few years ago. When I first moved to Mason the Fire Station was located across the street from my house on Oak Street. It is a volunteer fire department. This meant when a call went in for a fire the volunteers had to make a quick dash to the station. Each person had a siren for their car and had street parking directly in front of my house. We had a number of late night fire calls with numerous cars arriving in front of my house with sirens blaring. Interesting.

19-21. Finally I reach the Ace Hardware store at the intersection with one of the main streets leading to Mason. Much of the commercial area of Mason is on this street, Cedar Street.

The last hill walking home
22-24. There are a number of barn-style buildings in Mason, which is in the middle of farm country. I'm looking forward to the opening of our weekly farmers market. It will be in walking distance, but I frequently buy a lot of heavy stuff so I may still be driving to it. I paused to take the photo of flowers by the sidewalk using the Canon G9's macro setting. The final photo shows the steep hill a few blocks before reaching home. I thought this would be a fitting finish to my walk. Actually, instead of walking up this steep street as I has planned, I walked up the stairs to the left (click on the picture to see the larger version where the stairs are clearly visible). These stairs lead to the parking lot of Jefferson Street Square, previously a school building but now an elderly person's home.
