My photo walk of 27 June 2009

27 June 2009

56+ minute brisk walk.

I just obtained a Manfrotto 797 modopocket miniature "tripod" I got so I could take photos including myself during my walks. See Light Description for more information on the modopocket tripod (as well as a lot more information on the Canon G9) or check out the Monfrotto web site. I set out to walk enough to get some solid exercise (as I went along I decided I needed to go for at least 50 minutes). My weight was down to 205.2 on my scale this morning and I really want to avoid the normal bounce up after hitting a new low weight. I also wanted to take a limited number of photos, since I knew each stop would take more time than usual.

This was a real learning experience. It was a bright day and I discovered it was difficult to view the image on the G9's screen away from my face. Also, with such a small tripod device I found myself wishing the G9 has an articulated screen. You have to find a platform for this tiny tripod or place it on the ground, making viewing the screen somewhat difficult, especially in bright light.

A number of these photos were taken with the widest lens setting (35mm effective focal length compared to a standard 35mm camera). It would be difficult to take unattended self-timer shots with myself in the photo with a longer focal length, though I did attempt this with some photos below. All shots were taken at F8.0 to increase depth of field, since I would always be much closer to the camera than the chosen background.

I had never used the self timer on the Canon G9 so I had to refresh my knowledge on how to make this setting. One useful on-line reference is Adorama Guided Tour #11: Canon G9. I made several test shots to be sure I had it mastered. At the left is a more-or-less accidental self portraint (with a glimpse of my wife Anne in the background). With the flash turned off and the indoor light being rather subdued the camera set an exposure of 1 second, which demonstrates the effectiveness of the G9's IS (Image Stabilization). Amazing! Of course, click on the photo and examine the larger version and you'll see the problem with such a long hand-held exposure, but it's still amazing.

The above three photos show the Mason Public Library in the background. I found a handy FedEx box in front of the post office on which to place the camera with attached modopocket. With the difficulty in framing with the camera sitting on the box the middle photo unfortunately shows a lot of the FedEx box in the foreground. The modopocket is so small and light that I plan to simply leave it attached to the Canon G9. The only problem is that it is not possible to remove the battery (or memory card, which is in the same camera opening). The little battery door will just open a bit with the modopocket attached, not enough to remove the battery. The modopocket must be completely removed for access ... too bad.

Here I found a short wall on which to place the G9, and I decided to use a longer focal length to better show the Mason Fire Department in the background. The longer focal length created a new problem for including myself, though. The first photo cut off my head, so I kneeled for the second shot, but that still wasn't enough to compensate for the longer focal length. For some reason the second photo was not in focus, perhaps due to some error on my part. I'm not yet sure how focusing takes place in time-delay photos. If focusing takes place when I press the shutter button then carelessness at this point could lead to focusing errors.

The first two shots show the Mason Elevator in the background. The camera was placed on a picnic table. The first photo has me slightly out of the frame, so I made an adjustment for the second photo. Hopefully with time I'll learn how to better frame both the background and my personal placement in the frame.

The last photo was taken with the camera on the curb. Here I stand by the side of the Mason Tae Kwon Do studio, where my daughter's family (Meg, Jeff, Tobias and Hazel) all practice this martial art. I had to be particularly careful about setting the 10-second delay and rushing across the street to pose. In bright light it is a bit difficult to see the flashing light indicating the progress of the self timer.
