Photo Walks Around Town

My photo walk of 30 April 2010

30 April 2010

40 minute walk.

Needing to take a walk to bring down my blood glucose number after eating too many grams of carbs (mmm, chicken pot pie) I decided to take my first photo walk of the new year. Spring Fling is an annual event here in Mason and it happens tomorrow, so I went out looking for a few signs of the coming event. I also broke out my new Canon G11 camera for the first time for my photo walks, and there are a few comments about this camera in the notes to the following photos.

The Canon G11 is said to have better low light performance than the G9, so I shot the following photos at ISO200 instead of ISO100, as I usually used in past photos with the G9. Another outstanding feature of the G11 is the articulating viewing screen, which allows you to tilt the screen to more usable angles for framing photos. I used this feature on several situations below.

There are a lot of signs of the "Spring Fling" event coming up tomorrow. The Mason Area Historical Museum is holding an annual fund raiser Pie Sale. The Mason High School is holding a craft sale. The lawn of the County Courthouse is staked out for the vendor stands to be erected in the morning. A kiddie train ride is being set up. Also, the community is having a large number of garage/yard sales to take advantage of the large crowds of people visiting Mason for the Spring Fling.

The kiddie train ride is being set up for tomorrow's Spring Fling event. I pause in front of the Mason State Bank across the street from the courthouse to take a photo of the advertising sign for the "Spring Fling". In the window reflection you can see me using the articulated viewing screen of the Canon G11. The last photo shows some of the storage bins of the Mason Elevator Company for storing grain.

This photo of the Mason Elevator Company was made using the exposure compensation feature of the Canon G11 to compensate for the bright sky. The macro mode was used for the flower photo along with the articulating screen for easy framing with the camera held low to the ground. Darb's Tavern was one of the destinations of my walk to see if they had posted a notification that they are now Smoke-Free, as required by a recently passed state law. No notification could be located.

The local Ace Hardware store and another sign for an event to coincide with the Spring Fling. The first photo used an exposure compensation of +1.0 to counter the bright sky.

Sparty is the mascot for Michigan State University in nearby East Lansing. The resident here keeps this nice painted picture of Sparty on the tree in his yard. Another view of flowers taken from a low level made use of the articulated viewing screen with the camera held close to the ground. One of the many entrances to the popular Hayhoe Riverwalk is shown. This path was taken to reach the Elm Street hill that is a favorite of mine for my exercise walks.

This is my favorite hill for finishing exercise walks. It is quite steep and is a good finish for using up some calories. I walked by the local funeral home and finished up at home, where I took this self portrait.
