Photo Walks Around Town

My photo walk of 19 May 2010

19 May 2010

44 minute walk.

After dropping off my wife's car for service at the Andrew's Chevrolet service department I headed south on Cedar Street. It was fun checking out the wild areas behind the businesses on the west side of Cedar Street. I could hear the birds chirping away and see the wild growth and water. This was a rare mid-day walk for me so the light was bright and overhead. I left the ISO set to 200 and snapped away at fast shutter speeds. A had a new opportunity of walking through the grounds of the Ingham County Road Commission.

I started at Andrew's Chevrolet, my regular car shop. Heading south you immediately come to Biggby Coffee (formerly known as Beaner's). This building was an office for Mason State Bank till recently. There is still a drive-through for banking and an automated teller machine (ATM). But just west of this building and other businesses along the west side of Cedar Street is a wild area with water, plants and birds.

When I took my first photo the camera was still set at ISO 1600 from a previous photo walk. I changed to ISO 200 for the above shot of Andrew's Chevrolet. Following are two 100% crops showing why we should use lower ISO's whenever possible.

More wilderness area behind the Cedar Street businesses. Lots of green plants, water and wildlife. The birds were making a very pretty sound.

Next to the south is the old site for McDonalds restaurant. The building was demolished and the restaurant rebuilt a bit further north on Cedar Street. Next to this empty lot is Hebs Inn and Super Twist ice cream stand. Mason can boast three excellent ice cream businesses with Turtle Tom's in downtown Mason and Dairy Hill east of downtown on East Ash Street. I couldn't resist taking a photo of Super Twist's open sign.

I paused during my walk to check out the used furniture at Second Saturday, one of many Mason businesses selling used merchandise. Just south of Second Saturday I spotted buildings and equipment of the Ingham County Road Commission.

Here are three panoramas showing parts of the Ingham County Road Commission facility. I've often walked by the locked gate at night but never been there when the gates were open. I strolled through the facility and snapped a few photos showing their buildings and equipment. You can see the gas pump for their vehicles at the right on the bottom photo.

These "panoramas" show the quality of image produce by the Canon G11 camera. They were created simply by cropping off the top and bottom. Click on an image to see the full original shot. The original images were taking with the highest resolution JPG setting for a 3648x2736 pixel image. The larger images shown here in the popup windows when you click on an image have been reduced to a smaller 9912x684 size with a small amount of sharpening. Most of the thumbnail shots on this page are resized to 250x188 pixels.

Here is the main entrance to the Ingham County Road Commission. I usually walk by here late at night when everything is locked up. It was a treat to walk through the facility which was open during mid-day when I visited this time. I headed back to Cedar Street and crossed to the other side before heading back to Andrew's Chevrolet. I walked past the popular food supplier Westside Deli and then past the local strip mall.

Further north is the Bestco Water Treatment company which supplies water softeners, drinking water and salt. I dropped in for a bit to discuss purchasing a water softener for my home. City water is a bit hard in Mason. Then it was on past the Rite Aid drugstore, Won Ton Chinese restaurant (a favorite take-out place for me), a video rental store, Subway restaurant and (across the street) A&W restaurant. The last photo is of the new McDonalds restaurant. Note Mason's second water tower at the far right in the distance.

Another of our local restaurants is the Big Boy with its distinctive logo. Along the side of Cedar Street is a drainage ditch which almost caused a fall when I took a step back to take a photo. Whoops! I almost went down and got wet. Finally, waiting for me is my wife's red automobile. Thus ends another Mason walk.
