Photo Walks Around Town

My photo walk of 23 May 2010

23 May 2010

43 minute walk.

I was anxious to walk by my kids' house a few blocks away to check out their new vegetable box so I set out on another walk. The second row of pics below show what I found. I documented a number of local landmarks as well as some samples of local charm.

Here are photos of the "Mason Mansion", Jefferson Street Square and the Elm Street hill.

Check out my proud gardener granddaughter Hazel, my daughter Meg and her husband Jeff, and the garden box newly built by Jeff to provide an elevated garden for vegetables. Hopefully the local rabbits won't eat everything.

The old firehouse was converted into a restaurant (Mike's Firehouse Grill) and is now the home of Mexican restaurant Los Tres Amigos. Across the street is the famous Kean's department store and its associated restaurant Baja Grill picture below. Just north of Los Tres Amigos is Wheaton's Gallery, an excellent framing store.

North of Wheaton's Gallery is Mason Chiropractic Center and the Mason Barber Shop. The Chiropractic Center always has a nice selection of flower pots outside its front window. Across the street is the relatively new The Vault Deli, featuring high quality sandwiches, wines, meats and cheeses. Inside is a huge bank vault from when this location was the home of a bank. Now it is a wine vault instead of a money vault.

I like the colorful gumballs in the entrance to the Baja Grill restaurant. Turtle Tom's is an excellent ice cream shop right on the Mason square. Across the street is the impressive Ingham County Courthouse building. My wife will be on jury duty there in the near future.

The Mason Community Garden was just opened a few days ago. It is at the side entrance to the Maple Grove cemetary.

Sycamore Creek runs along the cemetary next to the Hayhoe Riverwalk path. Here is a shot of a rather full tree with the moon in the background and perhaps the most dangerous intersection in town where Okemos Street, Hagadorn Road and Columbia Road all intersect.

The park area at the intersection of S. Rogers Street and E. Sycamore Street provides a ball park, an outdoor roller rink and a skate board facility.

Here are a few attractive details of a Mason neighborhood. East Sycamore Street has a break in elevation which stops car traffic, but a winding sidewalk provides a path for pedestrians.
