26 May 2014 - Memorial Day in Mason

Today I had for lunch a bowl of Cuban Black Beans with a thin slice of bread. Apparently, even this very thin piece of bread was a bit too much added carbs and much blood glucose was 140 an hour after I finished lunch, so it was off on an excercise walk for me to run that number down. I decided to make this a photo walk, so I attached the Panasonic 20/1.7 lens to my new Olympus PEN E-PL5 camera and departed.

This lens is a moderate wide angle lens, so I decided to try some shots that go well with wide angles, namely I tried to include some close up objects in most photos. This gives a fairly large size in the photo for an object close to the camera, while things look smaller the further away from the camera they are. This effect will be clear in many of the photos below, as will the general large depth of field, meaning everything is in focus from far to near.

Not far from home I was reminded that this is a flag-appropriate holiday. Flags were very much in evidence. I had forgotten it was Memorial Day, but once I realized it I made the most of it with my selection of subjects. I followed my original intention of simply documenting the everyday things of Mason, but I made sure to include things related to the holiday. I hope you enjoy the flags and the simple things as well.

The first few photos were taken on my street, the middle shot above showing my house. Note how the tree in the first shot dominates the photo while the background houses look rather small, due to the use of the wide angle lens.

These photos show the town square with the large Ingham County Courthouse dominating the square. When I live on Oak Street my bedroom window looked out at the clock tower from a block away. It was a startling night when the clock first starting chiming on the half-hour after being repaired!

The last two photos show remnents of the huge Ash tree in my back yard which died along with so many Mason trees from the Emerald Ash Borers some years ago (a pest first found in Michigan in 2002). It was estimated the tree was about 170 years old when it died. Now it is being cut up to make first wood. Fortunately, we had it cut down last year. Otherwise, the big ice storm of last winter may have been a disaster for us.
