30 May 2015 - West Ash Street in Mason Picking up where I left off on the East Ash Street photo walk, I resumed walking west on Ash Street starting at Jefferson Street. The first photos are of the intersection and of the historic Kean's Store Company, home of my daughter Margaret's store Twisted Fiber Art. Within a few blocks are major Mason landmarks: Post Office, Library, City Hall with Police Department, Fire Department. When we first moved to Mason I lived on Oak Street almost directly across the street from the old Fire Department. Parking for the volunteer fire fighters was directly in front of our house so we got a lot of late night wakeup calls with volunteer's driving up sirens blaring. Now that old fire department building houses the fabulous Los Tres Amigos restuarant. The new Fire Department is most impressive with a good collection of first rate fire engines. I caught a locamotive passing through the crossing through Ash Street. I find the sound of the train whistle at night most attractive. I've paused during walks next to the rails when a train passed and found the experience very iimpressive with the massive power of the train very evident. Above is the fire department showing the five massive doors concealing the impressive fire engines. I had some involvement with the fire department in 2010 when I was asked for some of my photos for their educational efforts (to show the placement of equipment during a fire fight). See Fire on Cherry Street! It remains one of my most popular walk pages with over 500 hits, probably due to the network of fire fighters in the state sharing their activities. Below is a view of the Hayhoe River Walk which runs through the Lee Austin Park next to the Sycamore Creek. There is a nice children's playground in the park. The crawling tube particularly caught my eye.

A large collection of photos of the houses and yards along West Ash Street starts here. I simply couldn't leave out too many of my photos of the houses because I find them so attractive. That explains the size of this web page.

Here I've reached Cedar Street, a major commercial area of Mason. Ace Hardware is shown above along with a tanning salon and the Education Center. The next block shows the offices of my family dentist Dr. Zielinski on Kiwanis Drive. The Michigan office of the Kiwanis organization is located on this street. The Pink Schoolhouse is located a bit further along. The Historical Marker indicates it was opened on 1854.

Ash Street dead ends at the entrance to the Keith L. Hayes Park. I've devoted a number of photos below showing the many features of this park. The City of Mason well building surprised me. This was the third well building I came across on this walk, the other two being at the Pink School and behind the Fire Department. How many well buildings are there, and what is their function in the city? Hayes Park also has tennis courts, basketball court, playground, covered picnic area, baseball diamond and an interesting mound which provides a great sliding site during the winter where kids can bring their sliding boards. | |||
