16 June 2015 - Kipp Road

I set out to check out some glimpses I've had of large facilities near the Kipp Road entrance to south HWY 127. It turned out to be a couple companies on Jewett Road. My second goal was to document Kipp Road, so camera in hand I headed up Barnes Street past the Mason High School to Kipp Road. I turned west and walked all the way past the entrances to Hwy 127. I reach Jewett Road and satisfied my curiosity about what I had only glimpsed in the past. I was quite surprised to find some active oil wells in a field there. I am still playing with my new Fisheye lens so at the bottom of this page are some samples taken on my way home.

Heading towards Kipp Road I took a few photos along Barnes Street. The first two above were just for fun. Then a couple photos of Mason High School, the river running next to Barnes, and the interesection of Barnes and Kipp. Note that Barnes Street changes its name to Eden when you cross Kipp Road.

Looking south along Eden Road you pass Mason Jewett Field, the local airport. Some of the hangers can be seen to the left of the road. Heading west on Kipp Road I passed the Rieth-Riley Construction Company. You can see some of the huge piles of construction material above. Move views along Kipp Road are shown below.

The large Gestamp North America facility is located at the intersection with Jefferson Street. Below is the southern end of the Hayhoe Riverwalk. See the Trail Guide for more information about this very pleasant nature walk through Mason.

Two photos above show banking facilities fairly new to Mason. There are now three banks within a few hundred yards of each other. The middle photo above is of the old Hart Services company which provided water wells and pumps. Now overgrown, the planting box in front used to be decorated with great care to reflect the current holiday. The photos below show the big Meijer grocery store and cross street gas station/McDonald's restaurant. The middle shot is of the wetlands area next to the Meijer store. This is at the intersection of Kipp Road with Jefferson Street. As with Barnes Street becoming Eden Road, Jefferson Street becomes Hull Road south of Kipp.

On the north side of Kipp Road leading to the on/off ramps for Hwy 127 are S & Sue's Dry Cleaners and Smalley's Auto Service. The first unoccupied building is the site of my first job in Michigan when KI Software occupied the building. I spent much of my time modifying old COBOL programs preparing for the year 2000, when 2-digit year designations would suddenly fail to work properly. Below are a couple photos of the highway 127 and the overpass.

Below are a few things I discovered once I crossed the overpass to see what some of those occasionally glimpsed things were I saw when driving onto the Hwy 127 South entrance. The large facilities I had glimpsed turned out to be the Morrison Industrial Equipment Co. and the Mason Garage for MDOT (Michigan Department of Transportation) located on Jewett Road. I was surprised to find two working oil wells in the field opposite.
