21 August 2017 - Solar Eclipse in Mason |
Solar Eclipse The eclipse of the sun here was not total, but it was somewhere around 80-90%. It was also cloudy and I struggled a bit with my equipment, but in the end I got a few good views. I used a William Optics Zenithstar 70ED Doublet F6 telescope (approximately 3" diameter main lens) mounted on an old 2.4" Unitron telescope alt-azimuth mount. The weight of the telescope and bad balance made it a bit difficult but it worked OK. The smaller telescope was a 2" refractor I assembled many years ago. It was on a camera tripod. The eclipse photos below were not in sharp enough focus but were good enough to show sun spots. You can see the clouds drifting by in some shots. My wife, daughter and granddaughter came by along with some of the staff from my daughter's yarn business. They observed the eclipse through the two telescopes and checked out the shadows showing the effects of the non-round sun. The best view of this was obtained by using a kitchen colander. Some views show our attempt at growing a wild flower garden. The first flowers were just starting to open. Click on any photo to see a larger version in a popup window. |
