Q-176; 1997-99
Hitselberger, J. (X) - Houser, T. (M)
Ruy Lopez C91

1 e4 e5

[This game is interesting because it pitted the eventual winners of Super Queen XVII (Ted Houser) and Super Queen XVIII (myself). Previously in Super Queen XV (won by Rick Melton) Ted beat me quite convincingly.]

2 Nf3 Nc6 3 Bb5 a6 4 Ba4 Nf6 5 O-O Be7 6 Re1 b5 7 Bb3 O-O 8 d4 d6 9 c3 Bb7

[9 ... Bg4 is standard and leads to equality With the text Black loses a move in the main variations because White has not bothered with h3. However, it does not necessarily lead to a bad position.]

10 Nbd2 exd4 11 cxd4 Nb4 12 Qe2

[Protecting the d3 square.]

12 ... c5

[Expanding on the queenside.]

13 a3 Nc6 14 dxc5

[Going for kingside play.]

14 ... dxc5 15 e5

[Driving away the stalwart defender - knight on f6.]

15 ... Nd5 16 Ne4 c4 17 Bc2 Qc7 18 Neg5

[Starting to soften up the Black kingside pawn structure.]

18 ... g6

Position after 18 ... g6

19 Qe4!

[Perhaps the best move of the game. Similar to Edwards-Jones (APCT NB , Sept-Oct 1998), the White queen will maneuver to critically wound Black's kingside pawn structure. White's queen movement is instructive. Usually it is bad to move the queen out in the opening and into the early middlegame. But here, the difference is that Black cannot harass the White queen effectively.]

19 ... Nd8

[Clearly sensing danger, Black safeguards e6 and f7.]

20 Qh4

[Weakening.]

20 ... h5

[Weakened.]

21 Qg3 Bxg5

[Trying to defend against the sacrifices on g6 or f7. After this trade, Black is left without the usual dynamic defensive duo of the knight on f6 and the bishop on e7.]

22 Qxg5

[Putting the pressure on g6.]

22 ... Ne6 23 Qh6 Rfe8 24 Bg5

[The g6 pawn cannot yet be taken because the Black queen protects the 7th rank.]

24 ... Qc5

[Now the black queen is overloaded. It cannot simultaneously protect against the Bxg6 sacrifice and the threatened mate on g7.]

25 Bxg6

[Of course, now that the Black queen has vacated the seventh rank ...]

25 ... fxg6 26 Qxg6+ Kf8

[26 ... Ng7 27 Bf6 Qc7 28 Ng5 +-]

27 Qh6+

[The trick here is to try to prevent Black defenders, especially the queen, from coming to the aid of her king.]

27 ... Kg8 28 Bf6!

[Constructing a would-be mating net.]

28 ... Qc7

[28 ... Nxf6 29 exf6 Bxf3 30 Rxe6 Qc7 31 f7+! +-]

29 Qh8+ Kf7 30 Qxh5+

[Gathering up the third pawn to gain full material compensation for the sacrificed piece and clearing the way.]

30 ... Kf8 31 Nh4 Ndf4 32 Qh6+ Kg8 33 Re3

[Trying for a rook swing. One would think that with five attackers (including two heavy woods) White would be able to capture the king, but Houdini is in the building and finds a miracle escape.]

33 ... Ne2+!

[The escape. Now Black's queen can come to the defense of the king. And, with a virtuoso technical performance, Black lasts for an unbelievable twenty more moves.]

34 Rxe2 Qh7 35 Qxh7+ Kxh7 36 Rd2

[The White rook must become active before the dark knight reaches d3 and clogs the position.]

36 ... Nc5 37 Rd6 Bc8

[Before the knight ventures to d3 Black must safeguard his second rank.]

38 Re1 Ra7 39 f4

[Rolling, rolling. The pawns must roll to collect the point.]

39 ... Rd7 40 Rxd7+ Nxd7 41 Rd1 Nc5 42 Rd6 Nd3

[The threatened capture of b2 is neutralized by the sharp opposite bishop play and by White's better pieces.]

43 Bg5 Kg8 44 Rc6 Bg4 45 Rc7 Rf8 46 h3 Be6 47 Ng6 Rf7 48 Rc6

[Keeping the better rook. Sometimes it is better not to trade when you're up.]

48 ... Bf5 49 e6 Bxg6

[Losing the exchange. This is what is known in advanced chess theory as the "kitchen sink" defense. Black throws off material to stop a queening or mate.]

50 exf7+ Bxf7 51 f5 a5 52 Bf6 Be8 53 Rc7 1-0
