Obverse Types A, B, C

Coins minted from 1862 through 1873 all have the date 1862.
The legend reads "Victoria Queen" for coins dated 1862 - 1876.
It reads "Victoria Empress" for coins dated 1877 - 1901.

The Quarter Rupee coin has three distinct Obverse designs, which can be identified by examining the panels on the front of the dress. The floral patterns in the dress also differ. Note that type B only occurs on the issues of 1877 through 1885. It appears that only Type C was used in 1886-1901.

Type A - The front of the dress has 4 panels. A flower appears at the right on the bottom panel.
Type B - The front of the dress has 3-3/4 panels. A flower appears at the center on the bottom, incomplete panel.
Type C - The front of the dress has 3 panels. A flower appears at the left on the bottom panel.
