Photo Walks Around Town

My photo walk of 26 May 2009

26 May 2009

After dinner my blood sugar was up to 140 when I measured, and I also needed some cash from the bank, so this was a good time for another photo walk! I was pretty late and was just starting to get dark so this was a good test for the Canon G9. Many of the exposures were fairly long (1/10 to 1/40 sec.) so I depended heavily on the Image Stabilization function of the camera. I threw out several photos but overall I had good results. As usual I include the EXIF information with the larger size copies of these images. Just click on any image to see the larger size image with information. The original images were 4000x3000 pixels. The "large size" images were resized to 1000x750 and the thumbnails below are mostly 250x188 pixels.

Since my main objective was the bank I headed there first. The second picture shows the entrance to the Mason State Bank, where they provide an ATM machine with 24-hour access. I was interested in a lengthy walk taking me to a new area, so I determined to head west on Maple Street and then over to Ash Street once I reached Cedar Street. This would take me past the Ace Hardware store featured in a previous walk on 5 May 2009 and then past my local dentist. Then I would soon enter "unknown territory". In fact, I discovered a new (to me) Mason park that ran between Ash Street and Columbia, right next to Highway 127. I was confused about the name of the park. I noted that the playground area had a sign designating "Palmer Park". Then, as I exited the park by the ball field on Columbia I saw a large sign designating the park as "Keith L. Hayes Park". A little research turned up the minutes from the Mason City Council meeting of October 2, 2006 including the following statement: "NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, the Mason City Council, in honor of the contributions made to the City of Mason by Leslie and Eleanor Palmer, as well as the Palmer family, do hereby designate the playground within Hayes Park as Palmer Playground." Thus the mystery was solved.
