Photo Walks Around Town

My photo walk of 28 July 2009

28 July 2009

78 minute walk.

I set out for the Ingham County Animal Shelter to take some self-portraits in the cool dog cutout in front of the building. Now that I have the modopocket tripod (described in my Walk of 27 June 2009) this should be easy. What wasn't easy is getting down close enough to the ground so my head was at a good angle for the photo (and doing it within the 10 seconds self timer delay). You can see my two best self-portraits at the bottom of this page. I also wanted to walk all the way to the SNAP gym where I exercise 3-4 times a week, mostly with 40-minute walks on the treadmill. I can burn about twice as many calories per minute on the treadmill that I do by walking (I can maintain a much higher pace with a 2 degree uphill tilt). Alas, the bridge over Highway 127 just before reaching the gym proved to be an unsafe route for walking, given the two feet or so clearance between the edge of the road and the guard rails. In the name of safety first I declined to walk the bridge.

I started my walk as in the Walk of 15 July 2009 but heading north on Mason Street (the dead end street) and then cutting over to the railroad tracks. The first photo was from the street with the Mason antique shops looking back to the Mason Elevator company. Things were busy there with lots of noise from equipment, but I couldn't actually see any activity, only hear it. Once I was on Mason Street I took a couple shots of buildings along there, then cut over to the railroad tracks where I took a few other shots. I took my final photos at the Animal Shelter. After that it became too dark to take photos.

One of my main destinations today, the dog cutout in front of the Ingham County Animal Shelter. I wanted to use my modopocket tripod to take some self-portraits. I placed the Canon G9 in the driveway in front of the building (no traffic at this late hour), set the self-timer to 10 seconds, and made a dash to the dog cutout. Two of my three attempts were fairly successful, though getting down low enough on the ground was pretty tricky.
