12 August 2018 - 9th Annual Camino of St. James 8K/5K and Fun Runs
12 August 2018 - 9th Annual Camino of St. James 5K Race
The local St. James Catholic Church has been sponsoring this race for nine years, including this one. I participated for the first time in 2015 and it was such a pleasant experience that I am participating again for the third time (despite the 8:00 am start time!). Oh, that 8am start time!!
The number of runners is far fewer than the Mason State Bank (now Commercial Bank) 5K earlier in the year which makes it feel very different. The 5K route is mostly on Lansing Street (which runs in front of the St. James Catholic church) and through the Grove Street Cemetary. Towards the end there is a mild uphill stretch on Lansing St. to finish the race, but this is nothing like the brutal uphill finish of the Mason State Bank race. People are friendly and there is an almost party atmosphere as people gather for the start.
One feature of this race is the pancake man. He wears a pancake costume and is very popular indeed. I saw him posing for photos with several people. He ran the 8K version of the race this year. Anyone who runs a better time (in the 8K race this year) receives a prize. For 5K participates prizes go to all whol run a better average time. The pancake represents the free pancake breakfast all participants are invited to enjoy. You can see the pancake man in the 4th photo below (the one holding a giant fork).
One amusing incident occurred when I was looking around the breakfast room for the computer that would display my final time. A very pleasant lady approached me and congratulated my on winning first place. I was naturally surprised. She had noted my bib number and entered it into the computer which told her that I had taken first place in my age group (75-79 years). I was very pleased as you can see in the last photo below. Later I checked the Playmakers web site and confirmed my first place. I also noted that I was the only entry in this age group!
All my photos this year were taken with the iPhone 6 Plus.
