The following is my best attempt to
provide a complete list of the 1/2 Pice coins of Victoria
1862-1901. In general, the list provided in Standard
Catalog of World Coins (Krause) is excellent. The proofs,
patterns and restrikes are not listed below. The 1862 issue
is the only one minted in Madras (also minted in Calcutta).
The only way to recognize the mint with the 1862 coins is
the diameter of the coin, according to current thought.
Except for 1862, all dates were minted only in Calcutta.
Krause notes that proofs and restrikes exist dated 1862
from pattern dies with 4-3/4 panels and a different dress
floral design.
The coin was minted at two mints as
indicated in the listings.
c - Calcutta
m - Madras
There are no obverse or reverse types
listed making this a very simple series to collect. Proofs
and P/L restrikes exist for the years 1875, 1877 and 1878.
The normal strikes for circulation exist in 1862, but then
the next year of minting was 1885.
