2016 Photo Walks in
Mason, Michigan (USA)

I am still mainly using the Olympus OM-D E-M1 camera with the Olympus PRO 12-40/2.8 zoom lens. I also use a Rokinon 7.5mm/ F3.5 Fish eye lens and several Olympus lenses, such as 9-18, 14-150 and 75-300. I continue walking a great deal, mostly around Mason. My wife Anne frequently walks with me as we attempt to maintain good health.

Mason Fire Department Open House

It was a perfect day for the Mason Fire Department to have an open house, nice temperture and sunny skies. The youngster turned out in abudance enjoying the fire truck rides (with frequent bursts from their sirens), climbing on the equipment, playing the games, etc. The fire department did a splindid job of entertaining the educating the youth along with some of us older folk. Here are 36 photos showing some of the various aspectrs of the day.

Down Home Days

As usual, this was a fun event with lots of interesting booths, crafts, public information, food, church ladies with excellent baked goods (I can report based on personal experience), an entertainment area and the regular Saturday Farmers Market. Following are a selection of photos to give a taste of the event.

7th Annual Sun Dried Music Festival

Once again this event was a spectacular success, despite the heavy rain on Saturday morning. This web page was rushed to publication, so there will probably be a few corrections and additional material added later.

The 12 bands that participated on the Main Stage and Stage 2 are covered plus one band from Stage 3. Once the rain stopped early on Saturday the crowds showed up to listen to these fine bands and dance to the music.

7th Annual Camino of St. James 5K Race

I participated in this 5K race for the second year. As with last year, this was a fun event. I struggled this year but was able to finish the race without setting a new personal record for worst time. The "pancake man" was there challenging all comers to beat his time and win prizes. I counted only four runners who did it.

Checking the results on the Plamakers web site I believe there were 106 5K participants and 73 in the 8K race for a total of 179 total, This made for a pleasant and low key event.

Independence Day in Mason

In Mason, Michigan we always have a full day on the 4th of July. Today started with a Vintage Car Show on the square, with three of the four streets surrounding the County Courthouse closed to traffic for the annual vintage car show. That is followed by a typical small town parade with lots of tractors, cars, fire trucks and other local attractions. When it gets dark we have the fireworks display, supervised by the local fire departments.

A Walk in Eaton Rapids, Michigan

Eaton Rapids was an interesting place to visit and to photograph. We had a pleasant time there with two lengthy walks around the different areas of town and also enjoyed a nice lunch at the River Side Cafe. There were numerous historical signs around town to give us a feel for the history of this city. And, it was a great day to be outside. I hope you enjoy my selection of photos of our day there.

Spring Fling

The day after the Mason State Bank 5K Race we have the annual Spring Fling event on the square surrounding the Ingham County Courthouse. Local vendors set up their booths, various children activities are provided, and we all gather to welcome the arrival of Spring. I frequently pick up a few Christmas and birthday gifts and always purchase some treats, such as brownies, cookies and other delicious items. The church lady booth(s) always get a lot of my attention.

Annual Mason State Bank 5K Race

This year marked my seventh straight year participating in the Mason State Bank 5K race, which benefits the Mason Public School Foundation. I didn't train specifically for this race this year, but I have been doing a lot of walking, aiming at 15,000 steps a day (7-1/2 miles) and at least 12,000 steps. So my stamina was pretty good.

When the race started I tried to get as good a start as possible by jogging a large percentage of the time on Maple Street before reaching the first turn onto Temple Street. This probably was the key in beating last year's time. My phone app showed me that my average time was dropping steadily as the race continued but I worked very hard to minimize the dropoff. Of course, the final few blocks were brutal with that uphill grade ... very easy to let your time really suffer ... so at the end I was totally exhausted. Seeing my time posted as better than last year's time and meeting up with my wife Anne and heading off to the Daily Scoop ice cream shop for my reward revitalized me.

A Walk in Chelsea, Michigan

After driving to Stockbridge, where we intended to have lunch at the Stockbridge Diner (famous for their Chicken Fried Steak, which is very good indeed) but were disappointed that it was closed for the day, we looked around for another location for walking and wound up in Chelsea, a very pleasant town (see our photo walk for 6 August 2015). They are home to Jiffy Mixes (I've used their cornbread mix for years) and the Common Grill restaurant and have very nice residential areas for pleasant walks. We had a walk before lunch and another after lunch. We deviated from eating at the Common Grill to try something new and had a really good meal at the Plaid Melon Cafe.
